“Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.” (I John 4:11)
The membership of Reid Temple, like that of every congregation of the A.M.E. Church since its founding, is divided into small organizational groups, called classes. All new or transferring members are assigned to a class after completing their reading-in process. Each class is headed by a Class Leader, who is appointed by the Pastor and trained in the history, structure, and disciplines of the A.M.E. Church.
Because they report directly to the Pastor, Class Leaders help him to remain aware of the “pulse” of Reid Temple’s large congregation. And because they serve as under-shepherds or mini-pastors for their classes, they must also have a strong calling to love and serve others. Class Leaders listen to their members’ church- or faith-related questions and address their spiritual concerns before they become spiritual challenges. They also visit and pray with the sick, shut-in, and bereaved.
