Under the leadership of our pastor, Dr. Lee P. Washington, the Young Adult Choir of Reid Temple
African Methodist Episcopal Church (YAC) has been under the direction of Richard C. Odom, Associate Minister of Music, since May 2010. YAC's 120 members, ranging in age from 18 to 40, minister to a globally diverse, growing, multisite church, with more than 17,000+ members of the Reid Temple AME Church’s Glenn Dale, Maryland campus. Congregants enjoy the choir's energetic renditions on the 2nd and 5th Sundays throughout the entire calendar year.
In addition to special and seasonal occasions and community appearances, members also sing and assist with the Mass Choir, Temple Choir, Children for Christ, Chorale, Woman’s Choir, Orchestra, and the Mighty Men of Reid, and various praise and worship teams. Besides music ministry, members also serve with Evangelism and Outreach Ministries and other Young Adult Ministries and specialty committees.
YAC is the present-day “Choir Without Walls” in that the ensemble also endeavors to sing the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ beyond the walls of Reid Temple, having ministered with Lonnie Hunter for Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound (September 2012), and at the Washington Wizards’ Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebrations (January 2012/2014).
We recognize that everyone is not able to attend worship services in the local church, so we extend our reach to minister to the sick and shut-in of all ages from young people in the hospital to senior citizens in a nursing home.
In conjunction with Reid Temple AME Church’s Mission Statement – to follow the will of God our Father, live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ Our Redeemer and administer to the needs of man, our brother and woman, our sister – YAC continues to engage and inspire others to praise and worship God by living out this scriptural passage: “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.” Psalm 100:1-2 (KJV).
