The Reid Temple Discipleship Program is designed to assist believers interested in developing a closer relationship with God, understanding the Power of the Holy Spirit, and transitioning from being simply a member of a church to being a Disciple of Christ. This journey is a process, one that entails learning about the principles outlined in the Bible and understanding how we apply these biblical principles in our lives to carry out God's plan.
Reid Temple is mindful of the importance of a proper Christ-centered discipleship program, for discipleship programs that are limited to imparting knowledge run the risk of orthodoxy without orthpraxy----correct thinking without appropriate application or action.
Teaching equips disciples with truth, but training equips them with skills. Reid Temple's discipleship programs are centered on the formation of holy habits and practical skills so that disciples will acquire ingrained responses to the opportunities, challenges, and temptations they encounter every day.
Expectation for Reid Temple members: Romans 12:1 calls for us to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy, acceptable to God which is our reasonable service and verse 2 challenges us not to conform to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, that we may prove what is good and acceptable and in the perfect will of God. The expectation of Reid Temple is that each member will commit to:
1. Become a disciple
· Strengthen your relationship with Christ
· Attend Bible Study, Sunday Service, and participate in a discipleship program
· Grow to tithe
2. Recruit disciples
· Enroll in ministry and attend training and development classes
· “Go” – Provide service through ministry
3. Make disciples
· Witness to and empower others to strengthen their relationships with Christ
The central impetus of discipleship should be a radical commitment to reflect the person of Jesus Christ. This level of commitment comes with a price tag of personal dedication, self-denial, and the obedience of the cross. Without accountability, biblical norms (and the rest of the scriptures) become negotiable.
The Mission and Vision
Reid Temple's vision of discipleship challenges each member to self-assess their spiritual relationship with Christ and to grow from their current level of spiritual maturity towards the goal of becoming a willing disciple. Spiritual development and discipleship are at the forefront of the teachings and vision for the Church. Rev. Dr. Lee P. Washington believes and teaches that discipleship training is for all God’s people. He further testifies that all Christians should desire and strive for excellence in ministry—rooted in a disciplined relationship with God, grounded in integrity, and guided by intentional actions. The Reid Temple Discipleship Development Program is an evolving, life-changing program designed to promote spiritual growth to move us from membership to fellowship to stewardship to discipleship.
