Children Ministries

BOY SCOUTS PACK 450

The Boy Scouts ministry at Reid Temple serves young boys and teen-aged males between the ages of 11 and 17 years old. As a division of the national Boy Scouts of America organization, which celebrated its 100th year in 2010, Troop 450’s mission is to instill the values of the Scout Oath and Law in our young men and to prepare them to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes. Troop 450 is an active program that engages young men and their families in activities that reinforce Christian beliefs and the principles of the A.M.E. Church.  The B.S.A. requires that all Pack volunteers, regardless of their position, be properly registered and trained before beginning their Cub Scout service. Volunteers must complete the B.S.A.’s Youth Protection Training Program prior to initial registration and every two years thereafter.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE/VOLUNTEER
This ministry meets every Monday at 7:00pm.  Contact Bro. Dwayne Betts, Ministry Leader, or Bro. Gerry Smith, Troop Master at 301-352-0320, ext. 407, for more information and for information on meeting locations.

BOY'S TO MEN MINISTRY

Boys to Men is a God-glorifying mentoring ministry that provides the young men and boys of Reid Temple with opportunities to benefit from the wisdom of older Christian men who have accomplished spiritual and material success and harmony in their lives. It pairs the younger males one-on-one with men of the church who can provide them with positive role models, guidance, and support for their transition to adulthood. Boys to Men workshops, outings, and other events are designed to strengthen these nurturing relationships and equip the youth with the essential life skills they will need to lead victorious Christian lives. Through this ministry, the men of Reid Temple can help their younger male counterparts to grow spiritually, develop a sense of belonging within the church, and fulfill their God-given potentials.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE/VOLUNTEER
This ministry meets every 3rd Friday from 7:00pm to 9:00pm on the Reid Temple-Glenn Dale Campus.

BRIDGES MINISTRY

“For mine house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” Isaiah 56:7

The Bridges Ministry embraces the “whole-person” concept in its support of individuals with disabilities as well as its advocacy on their behalf. Members of this ministry assist anyone who needs help getting to or into the church, its services, or programs due to a physical or other disability. Their efforts enable members and visitors with disabilities, their caretakers, and other family members to participate to the fullest extent possible in the spiritual and social activities of Reid Temple and the community. Each month, they arrange accessible Communion and Sunday School services for this very special population. They also provide at-home and school assistance, recreational activities, Bible instruction, an information and resources clearinghouse, sensitivity training for the non-disabled, support groups, and twice-yearly Respite Days for caretakers and parents.

YOUTH INVESTMENT CLUB

The Youth Investment Club (Y.I.C.) is a joint project between Reid Temple and the Literacy Institute for Financial Enrichment, Inc. (L.I.F.E.). It aims to increase our young members’ knowledge of financial matters so that they can become responsible savers, smart investors, knowledgeable consumers, and better stewards of their God-given riches. The five-hour Y.I.C. program, offered twice yearly (Spring and Fall), focuses on showing youth how taking control of their finances can help them develop behaviors and attitudes that lead to financial independence and discipleship. Through lectures, discussions, and interactive group and individual assignments, Y.I.C. students learn basic money management principles and techniques, investment terms, the ins and outs of the stock and bond markets, and college funding essentials. They also learn how to avoid debt and manage credit. Culminating their Y.I.C. experience, students compete in a stock portfolio contest to test their new-found investment skills and leadership capacities.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE/VOLUNTEER
Minor youth (ages 12 to 18) must complete and return a membership application signed by their parent or guardian to enroll in the Y.I.C. Enrollment is limited to 30 students per session.
