There should never be a time in your life where you can point to a moment when you were thankless. Assignment: Have you ever thought of yourself as “thankless” or had an attitude of ingratitude? Write down five things (or more if you so choose) that you are always grateful for, regardless of circumstance. Write a prayer asking God to bring these things to your remembrance the next time you find yourself heading toward an attitude of ingratitude.
Feb 11th Living in God’s Will - The Bible commands that in good and bad times and during the highs and lows of life, we must still rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks in everything because this is the will of God. Assignment: What lows in your life, have eventually brought greater highs? What bad times have ushered in even greater times? Spend some time today looking at the challenges and experiences that God has used to make you better, stronger and wiser. Remind one close friend or family member of your past situation and God’s divine solution.
Feb 12th The Eyes of Faith - In order to truly live God’s will for your life, you have to incorporate a faith perception into your life, which simply means that you have to look at life through the eyes of faith because what you look for is what you will eventually find. Assignment: When you look at your situation, what do you see? Do you see opportunities? Do you see closed doors? Do you see hope? Consider your own mindset and figure out whether or not you are looking at your life through the eyes of faith. In a prayer ask God to reveal to your what eyes you are using to view your life.
Feb 13th Sharing Your Faith - Abraham had a faith perception. Although his wife, Sarai laughed when it was revealed that she would have a son despite her barren state, Abraham saw the future through the eyes of his faith and God did give them a child. Assignment: When someone shares their optimistic views with you, do you laugh? Do you doubt the power of God in your life? Think about your closest relationships. What viewpoints do your share with them? Do you encourage their hope and faith? Do you feed into their negativity? Find five and list five scriptures that will help you krrp a faith perception.
Feb 14th Faith Makes a Difference - Two men came to Reid Temple on a Sunday morning. They sat side by side in the same pew, on the same Sunday at the same worship service. One of the men scanned the church and saw that one of the musicians missed a note. He looked a little further and saw two worshippers whispering to one another in a corner. When it was time for collection he looked to see who was putting what in the collection basket. But the other man in the same pew, at the same service, on the same Sunday looked around and saw a father cuddling his infant child. He saw members giving and thought to himself, “God has been so good to me, it’s a shame what I put in as it relates to how God has blessed me.” He looked around and saw the choir signing. Both men left the church after the benediction. As they were walking out, the first man turned to the other and said, “That service was terrible.” The other man looked at him and asked, “How could you say that? All I sensed was the presence of God.” The difference was in their faith perception, and it is the same with you. Assignment: How does your perception alter your life? Is life a challenge because you believe it to be so, or is it full of promise, because of your perception? Today, deliberately adopt a faith perception. Write down your observations and at the end of the days determine whether or not your faith perception altered your life.
Week 3 Feb 15th: You Get What You Expect - If you come in not looking for God then you are not going to find Him. But if you come in expecting God to do something then He will and you will be a witness. Assignment: What do you expect to happen today? Do you expect God to bless you? List five ways that you expect to see God today. At the end of the day, go back and review your list. For the bonus, write down ways that you saw God that you hadn’t previously listed.
Feb 16th: Little Blessings Happen Every Day - You can learn how to rejoice always when you look for the little blessings that God drops in your life on a day-to-day basis. It is not just about seeing the obvious things but seeing His grace in the daily rituals of life. Assignment: What little miracles have you been missing? Perhaps it is a card in the mail from an old friend or finding that your groceries cost much less than you had budgeted? It could be a better attitude from a previously disgruntled employee. For today, focus on seeing the little blessings in your life. No matter how big or small, write them down as you see and experience them. In your prayers, don’t forget to thank God for them.
Feb 17th: Perfection in God’s Word - Has God let someone with the perfect word cross your path or have you been blessed by a child recently. Assignment: What miracles have you discovered in God’s Word? When you recently read a passage, did a piece of the Word cling to your heart? Find a miracle in God’s Word. Today, take the time to review some of your favorite scriptures. Reflect on those familiar words and write a prayer thanking God for the miracle that He has sent to you through the Bible.
Feb 18th: Don’t Take Gifts for Granted - Are you grateful for the simple fact that you were able to get up out of your bed and wash and feed yourself? These are the little things that you learn to give thanks for. Assignment: Do you take the simple facts of life for granted? Think of three simple facts of life that you are grateful for today and share them with three people.
Feb 19th: Be Careful What You Look For - Like many modern day Christians, Paul did not start off with a faith perception either. Before he was knocked down on his way to Damascus he had every intention of looking for Christians to curse, criticize and destroy. Today, a number of Christians come into the church with a similarly warped perception. They are coming to the church to look at other Christians but they are looking at the wrong thing. They should be looking at God. Somewhere God is in the midst of His people, but you can only see the move of God with a faith perception. Assignment: What do you look at when you come to church? Are you looking at everyone’s outfits? Are you checking out the choir? Think back to the last church service that you attended. On a sheet of paper list who or what were you focused on when you sat down in the pew? On that same sheet list who or what should you be focused on? Is there a difference in your answers? If so, make another list that details the changes you need to make in your mindset in order to change your focus.
Feb 20th: Have a Faith Expectation - Having a faith expectation means that you expect what your faith dictates to you. Fundamentally, you have to believe what your faith tells you. Even though things may not be going well, you can rejoice always. You can pray without ceasing and in everything give thanks when you have a faith expectation. Assignment: What is your faith dictating to you regarding your life? On a small slip of paper write down the answer to this question. Place this slip in your Bible because this is your faith expectation.
Feb 21st: Find Answers in Faith - What challenges are you experiencing right now? Did you recently receive a bad report from the doctor? Is the economy affecting your ability to pay your bills? Is your family falling apart? As you look for answers, you should ask yourself, “What is my faith expectation?” In other words, what are you expecting God to do? When you are secure in your faith expectation, you can pray without ceasing and give thanks in everything. Assignment: Do you trust your faith in the face of challenges? What is holding you back from fully embracing your faith expectation? Write down the barriers to you being secure in your faith expectation. After you have made this list, address how you are going to scale those barriers.
Feb 22nd: A Blues Test - We are people who originated the blues. But the blues has within it an expectation which says, “Although my life is blue and things aren’t as they should be, one day the sun is going to shine in my back door.” Every Christian ought to have a blues test. Just because things aren’t going right doesn’t mean that things will never go right. Your faith ought to kick in at some point allowing you to expect things according to your faith. Assignment: What is giving you’re the blues? Has your faith kicked in yet? Draft a short list of your current tribulations and meditate on what your faith is telling you about them. As your faith kicks in, list your faith’s responses next to your tribulations.
Feb 23rd: Have a Faith Gratitude - You can rejoice always, pray without ceasing and in everything give thanks when you have faith gratitude. Assignment: Is your faith perception and faith expectation giving you an attitude of gratitude? Take some time today to write a letter to God thanking Him for the breakthroughs that you know through your faith expectation are in store for you.
Feb 24th: Observance vs. Celebrating - There is a difference between observance and celebration and the two terms should not be confused. Most businesses shut down in observance of Thanksgiving, but this does not mean that they celebrate the event. Christians do not just observe. Christians celebrate! I do not just observe the fact that Jesus went to the cross. I celebrate because He went to the cross. I do not just observe the fact that He got up on the third day on Easter Sunday. I celebrate because He got up on the third day with all power in His hands. Assignment: What are you celebrating today? Or do you think that you have nothing to celebrate? Write down five God-given reasons to celebrate and share these reasons with five people.
Feb 25th: True Thanksgiving - True thanksgiving is not something that you can coerce. Either it is in you or it is not. That is why you can’t make people praise God. The praise team can sing all they want, but if someone is not genuinely thankful, he or she will be unmoved. Assignment: What are you thankful to God for? When was the last time that you expressed this gratitude to your closest family and friends? Tell five of the people closest to you why you have a heart full of thanksgiving.
Feb 26th: Change Your Mind - When I was growing up my mamma would go through a rigorous house cleaning around this time of year. We would start getting the house ready for Christmas around Thanksgiving. Mamma would literally take the blinds down, wash the blinds, wash the windows and then put the blinds back up. She would vacuum and we had to help. But there is something else that she would do since were poor (although we didn’t know it). She would wallpaper. She would take the tape board and flour and water, because we didn’t have Elmer’s glue, and spend all day putting this messy glue on the back of those strips and line them up on the wall. When she was finished it looked like a different room. By putting up wallpaper, she gave the house a different texture and ambiance. Assignment: What is your mind filled with? Are you filled with positive thoughts or do you have a mind full of worries and grievances? What do you want your mind to be filled with? Make a decision today to check your state of mind. To start, pay special attention to your thoughts and figure out if they are in line with how God would have you think. After careful review, design new wallpaper. Draft a prayer asking God to wallpaper your mind with the design that you have chosen.
Feb 27th: Combat the Attack - The point is that every saint of God has to learn how to wallpaper his or her mind. You have to wallpaper your mind with praise so that when the enemy comes against you, you can look at your changed ambiance and rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks in everything. Assignment: What ideas has the enemy slid into your mind? What words did you use to combat his attack? Go through your Bible, find and write down at least five key passages that you can use to combat the enemy’s attack on your mind. Spend the day wallpapering your mind with these scriptures.
Feb 28th: Rerun the Good Times - During the holidays the television shows do not show new episodes. They typically bring you reruns, often showing the best of their featured series so that you can sit down and enjoy episodes that you may have missed. Well, when the enemy comes against you, you have to program your mind to rerun the best times in your life when God blessed you or delivered you from a situation. When you do this, you are able to maintain your focus on God and not allow the enemy to take you out of relationship with Him. This is what God wants you to do. Assignment: What were the best times of your life? Do you remember certain times where you could feel God working in your life? Look back at your past. Allow yourself to reflect on God’s blessings and write a prayer asking God to bring those remembrances to your mind as you are suffering through trials and tribulations.
